Overview
Nothing embarrassing. If the name variable has no value, the greeting falls back to "there" — so "Hi {name}" sends as "Hi there" rather than showing a broken variable or an awkward gap.
You do not need to build your own conditional logic for this.
Steps
Step 1: Open the template
Step 2: Check the greeting uses a real REsimpli variable
Valid variables appear in teal in the template editor. If your variable is showing as plain text, it is not recognised and will send literally.
Step 3: Test both cases
Preview or send a test with a named contact and with a contact that has no name. That is the only way to confirm the fallback is working in your template.
Important Notes
The fallback exists to prevent a raw variable appearing in a message to a seller.
Teal means recognised. It is the quickest check that a variable is real rather than typed.
You do not need conditional logic for the greeting.
Templates migrated from 5.0 are worth re-checking. If a fallback does not behave as expected, confirm the template was updated after migration.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if the seller name is blank?
The greeting falls back to "there" — for example "Hi there".
Do I need to build my own conditional logic?
No, not for the greeting fallback.
How can I tell whether a variable is recognised?
Valid variables appear in teal in the template editor.
Troubleshooting
The raw variable name appeared in a preview or a sent message
It is not a recognised variable. Replace it with the supported REsimpli variable from the editor rather than typing it.
The fallback is not working
Test with a record that genuinely has no contact name, then confirm the template was updated after migration.
