How to Manually Update Transactions in REsimpli

Add a manual bank account, import transactions from a file, and categorise them in bulk with tags and colours.

Written by Anthony Estrada

Overview

If a bank account is not available for an automatic connection, you can add it as a manual account, upload your transactions from a file, and then categorise them in bulk.

This gives you the same financial tracking as a connected account — marketing spend, revenue, profit — without needing a live bank connection.

Part 1: Add a manual account

Step 1: Open Add

Click Add, then Add Manual Account.

Step 2: Enter the account details

  • Give the account a name, for example Chase Manual

  • Choose the account type, for example Checking

  • Enter the last four digits of the account number

  • Enter a starting balance and the date it applies from

The starting balance is what your balance is tracked against going forward. If you are starting your books from 1 September, enter the balance as of 1 September.

The account is created and appears in your list of accounts.

Part 2: Upload your transactions

Step 1: Download the transactions from your bank

Export the transactions you want to bring in from your online banking.

Step 2: Start the upload

On the account, click the three dots, then Upload Transaction, then Browse File and pick your file.

Step 3: Map the columns

Click Continue and map the columns in your file to the REsimpli fields — date, description, and amount.

Step 4: Import

Click Continue, then Import Transactions. Your transactions appear in the account.

Part 3: Categorise transactions automatically

Rather than working through the list one at a time, REsimpli can fill in the details for you.

Click the auto-fill option on the transaction list and it pulls the information across for every transaction it can match. Review what it has done, and if it looks right, confirm and update.

Part 4: Update transactions in bulk

Step 1: Find the transactions you want

Search the description field for the text they have in common — for example a supplier name.

Step 2: Select and update

Select the matching transactions, then click Bulk Update Transaction.

This applies your change to every transaction found, instead of editing each one by hand.

You can bulk update more than tags — vendor, property, and account information can all be set the same way.

Part 5: Add tags and colours

Tags are a second way to group transactions, separate from your categories.

Step 1: Add a tag

Open a transaction and add a tag, for example Google Ads. You can give each tag a colour.

Step 2: Verify

Confirm the change.

Step 3: Tag in bulk

Search for the transactions you want — for example everything matching Google — select them, then click Action, then Bulk Update. It takes a moment to load. Add the tag and apply.

Part 6: Find transactions by tag

Go to your tags to see every tag you have created, and click one to pull up all the transactions carrying it.

This gives you a quick way to track spend that does not line up neatly with your categories — an individual ad platform, a particular campaign, or a one-off project.

Also available

  • Rules — you can create rules that categorise transactions automatically as they come in, so your bookkeeping keeps itself up to date.

  • Multiple entities — if you run more than one business, such as one for wholesaling and one for flipping or rentals, you can link the bank accounts for each and track their financials separately.

Important Notes

  • The starting balance sets your baseline. Whatever date you enter it against is the point your balance is tracked from, so pick the date your books actually start.

  • Bulk update is the time-saver here. Searching the description and updating the whole set at once is far quicker than editing transactions individually, and it is the main reason to search before you start categorising.

  • Tags sit alongside categories, not instead of them. Use categories for your accounting structure and tags for the tracking that cuts across it.

  • Bulk update covers vendor, property, and account too — not just tags.

Troubleshooting

Your bank is not available for automatic connection

  • Add it as a manual account instead and upload the transactions from a file. Everything downstream — categorising, tagging, reporting — works the same way.

Your balance looks wrong after importing

  • Check the starting balance and the date you set it against when you created the account. The balance is calculated forward from that point.

The import did not bring in the right values

  • Check the column mapping. Date, description, and amount each need to point at the right column in your file.

Bulk update seems to hang

  • It takes a second or two to load before the update panel appears. Give it a moment before clicking again.

You cannot find transactions you tagged

  • Go to your tags rather than searching the transaction list. Opening a tag brings back everything carrying it.

Summary

Add a manual account with a starting balance, upload your transactions from a file and map the date, description, and amount columns. Use auto-fill to categorise what it can, then search the description and use Bulk Update Transaction to handle the rest in batches. Add coloured tags — individually or in bulk — and open a tag to pull up everything carrying it.
