A2P 10DLC Requirements for Bulk SMS vs One-to-One SMS

Why REsimpli asks for your company name and opt-out language on a one-to-one reply but not on a bulk send.

Written by Anthony Estrada

Overview

The A2P 10DLC compliance prompt behaves differently depending on whether you are sending a Bulk SMS or a one-to-one SMS.

Knowing which is which explains why REsimpli sometimes asks you to add your company name and opt-out language, and sometimes does not.

Bulk SMS

When you send a Bulk SMS, REsimpli does not require you to add the A2P 10DLC company name and opt-out language before sending.

The reason is that a bulk send goes to contacts with different histories. For some recipients it may be the first message they have ever had from you. For others there is already an active SMS conversation.

Because REsimpli cannot treat every recipient in a bulk send as a first-time contact, it does not apply the first-message requirement at the Bulk SMS level.

What happens after someone replies

Once a recipient responds, you have an active one-to-one conversation with that person.

If you then send them a manual one-to-one SMS, REsimpli checks whether the required A2P 10DLC information has already been sent in that conversation. If it has not, you will be asked to include it before the message can send.

That generally means:

  • Your business or company name

  • The applicable opt-out language, such as Reply STOP to opt out

Once it has been sent in that conversation, it should not need repeating on every following message.

Example

You send a Bulk SMS to 500 prospects.

1 · Your bulk message

Hi John, are you interested in selling the property at 123 Main Street?

2 · John replies

Possibly. What are you offering?

3 · You open John's conversation to reply

REsimpli may require the A2P 10DLC information at this point, because it has not yet been provided in this one-to-one conversation.

4 · Your reply, with the required information included

Hi John, this is ABC Home Buyers. I'd be happy to discuss the property with you. Reply STOP to opt out.

After that, you can continue the conversation normally.

The distinction in short

Send type

Does REsimpli require A2P information first?

Bulk SMS

No — not required by the sending screen before the bulk message goes out

One-to-one SMS

Yes, if it has not already been sent in that conversation

This means the required information is introduced at the point the conversation becomes direct one-to-one communication.

Important Notes

  • This describes how REsimpli applies the prompt inside the platform. It is about when the sending screen asks you for the information, not a statement of what carriers require of you generally.

  • A bulk send not prompting you is expected behaviour, not a sign that something is misconfigured.

  • The prompt is per conversation. Satisfying it with one contact does not satisfy it for another.

Troubleshooting

REsimpli asked for A2P information on a reply, even though you already sent a bulk message to that contact

  • Expected. The bulk send does not count toward the requirement for that one-to-one conversation. Include the information once in your reply and you can carry on normally afterwards.

Your bulk send did not ask for A2P information

  • Expected. The requirement is not applied at the Bulk SMS level, because recipients in a bulk send have different message histories.

You are being asked again in a conversation where you already included it

  • The information should only be needed once per conversation. If it keeps being requested, contact support.

Summary

Bulk SMS does not prompt you for your A2P 10DLC company name and opt-out language. A manual one-to-one SMS does, if that information has not already been sent in that particular conversation. Once it has been sent there, you can continue without repeating it.
