Overview
When a contact has several phone numbers, the A2P 10DLC first-message requirement is handled at the individual phone-number level, not at the contact or lead level.
Each phone number is treated as its own SMS conversation.
How it works
If a contact has three phone numbers, sending the required company name and opt-out language to the first number does not satisfy the requirement for the other two.
When you start a one-to-one SMS conversation with each number, REsimpli may require the A2P information on the first message sent to that individual number.
Why it works this way
Several numbers can sit under one contact without all belonging to the same person. A property record might hold numbers for:
The primary owner
A spouse or co-owner
A relative
Another household member
Because any of those numbers may reach a different person, the requirement is tracked separately for each one.
Example
A lead has three numbers recorded.
John Smith
(555) 111-1111
(555) 222-2222
(555) 333-3333
You send your first one-to-one SMS to (555) 111-1111 and include the required company name and opt-out language.
Later you message (555) 222-2222. Because that is a separate number and a separate conversation, REsimpli may require the A2P information again.
The same applies the first time you contact (555) 333-3333.
Do you need it on every message?
No.
Once the A2P information has been provided for a specific phone number, you should not need to include it on every following message in that same conversation.
Important Notes
The requirement is tracked by phone number, not by contact. This is the point people get wrong.
A number you have never texted starts fresh, even if you have been messaging the same person on another number for weeks.
It is once per number, not every message. After the first message to a given number, normal messaging resumes.
Troubleshooting
You were asked for A2P information again on the same lead
Check which number you are messaging. A second or third number on the same contact is a separate conversation and has its own first-message requirement.
You expected one message to cover the whole contact
It does not. Each number is treated independently, because numbers stored against one property may reach different people.
You are being asked repeatedly on the same number
It should only be needed once for that number. If it keeps appearing, contact support.
Key takeaway
A2P 10DLC first-message requirements are tracked by phone number, not by contact. A contact with three numbers may need the information provided three times — once as you begin each conversation.
